Knox Center Location & Hours

January 18, 2021: Due to COVID-19 protocols, the Knox Center will remain closed until further notice. Staff is still available for consultations; please contact [email protected].

The Knox Center is located in Room 2064, Shapiro Undergraduate Library on Central Campus. It is open during Shapiro Library hours. To enter the building between midnight and 8 a.m., you will need to use your MCard at the reader near the automatic door on the right side of the building, or standard door on the left side.

If you are registered with SSD, your MCard will get you into the Knox Center. Simply hold your card with the stripe facing the card reader until the light changes or you hear the door click. Then wave in front of the sensor to the left of the reader to open the door.

Via the stairs:

  1. Take the stairs to the second floor, and proceed through the doors.
  2. Follow the wall around to the right.
  3. Pass the elevators, and follow the wall around another right turn. You will now be in a long hallway.
  4. When the hall switches from tile to carpet, it becomes more open. You may wish to use the left wall for reference.
  5. You will pass 2 openings on the left, and then a long stretch of brick wall.
  6. The card reader for the Knox Center is mounted on this wall just before the small alcove that contains the Knox Center door.

From the elevators:

  1. Take the elevator to the second floor, and turn right upon exiting.
  2. Follow the right wall around a right turn. You will now be in a long hallway.
  3. When the hall switches from tile to carpet, it becomes more open. You may wish to use the left wall for reference.
  4. You will pass 2 openings on the left, and then a long stretch of brick wall.
  5. The card reader for the Knox Center is mounted on this wall just before the small alcove which contains the Knox Center door.

Transportation & Parking

The Commuter South (Campus bus) and #62 (AAATA city bus) both drop off at stop C202 in back of the Shapiro Library, on the north side of South University Avenue near Tappan Street. Turn left from the bus stop and follow the path along the side of the library. As you get near the front of the library, there will be an automatic door on your right.

Accessible parking is available on either side of the Shapiro Library building, in two lots off of South University Avenue. There are 4 spots in lot C10 to the East of the building and 5 spots in lot C5 to the West of the building between the Shapiro and Clements Libraries.

The signs for the spots in lot C5 are different from those in C10 and may have different rules as to what is required in order to park there (see the images of the signs below the map). See the U-M Parking and Transportation Services web page on Logistics, Transporation and Parking as to the requirements for use of these spots.
