Information for Graduating Students

As a U-M alum, you will now have access to use alumni computing services. It has been a pleasure to provide you with computing services during your time at the University of Michigan. Best wishes on your future academic and professional endeavors.

Some of your U-M computing services will end soon

If you’re not returning to U-M next term as a student or faculty/staff member, you will no longer be able to use some services as an alum. See below for a summary of the U-M computing services you keep and lose as an alum, as well as how to save or transfer any files you wish to keep for the computing services that will end.

U-M Dropbox
Lose

Download and save your U-M Dropbox files from your university account to your computer or a personal Dropbox account using a non-UMICH email address.

U-M Microsoft 365

Note: This includes OneDrive and SharePoint cloud storage and all Office productivity apps.

Download or transfer any files you wish to keep from your U-M Microsoft 365 account to your computer.

Deadline: Last day of examinations.

U-M Google services (Google Mail, Drive, etc.)
Keep

Your Google storage limit will change from 250GB to 15GB on May 1. Check your storage and clean up your U-M Google account if necessary.

If you are over 15GB on May 1, you will lose the ability to use Google Drive and Photos until you are under the limit.

On August 1, if you remain over 15GB, your U-M Google account will be considered abandoned and deactivated.

Deadlines: May 1 (Storage limit changes from 250GB to 15GB) and August 1 (Remaining over-15GB accounts are deactivated)

General Computing Services

Download or transfer files you have stored in AFS using one of these free access methods.

Canvas
Keep

Download content from courses in Canvas that you wish to keep. This might include instructional materials (e.g., presentations, videos, PDFs) as well as any materials that you have uploaded to Canvas as part of your coursework (e.g., assignment submissions, papers).

Deadline: By the last day of classes.

Alumni retain their Canvas profile indefinitely, but access to course sites, or specific content within sites, is subject to control by the instructor.

ITS Service Center assistance

No action needed. Alumni may continue to contact the ITS Service Center for help with U-M computing services.
Uniqname and MCommunity Directory profile
Keep
No action needed. Alumni keep their uniqname, UMICH password, and MCommunity Directory profile for life.
WiFi: MWireless, MGuest, and eduroam
Keep
No action needed. Alumni can continue to connect to MWireless or MGuest while on U-M campus locations. Eduroam is also available to alumni at higher-ed locations all over the world.
Wolverine Access

Security

You are encouraged to continue using Duo. Two-factor authentication is not required of alumni.
UM Emergency Alerts

Continue receiving Ann Arbor campus emergency alerts through the Michigan App, the U-M Public Safety App, or by following the Division of Public Safety and Security (DPSS) on Facebook and Twitter. All alerts via voice, text, and email will, however, end.

Deadline: 14 days after the last day of classes.

U-M VPN services

To continue using VPN for added security and access to some university resources, set up the VPN service for alumni.
UMICH Password and Account Recovery Info

Change your UMICH (Level-1) password or enter/update recovery information for your UMICH account at any time.

Computers & Software

Adaptive Software and Hardware

Alumni can find links to many free adaptive software and hardware resources on the ITS website. You will no longer have access to licensed programs such as Read & Write.

If you were enrolled with the Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD), you will no longer have access to the Knox Center as an alum.

Adobe Creative Cloud
Lose

Download or migrate your content to a free Adobe personal membership where you can store your work. You may purchase an individual Adobe account to continue using Adobe applications.

Deadline: Within 30 days of the last day of classes.

Campus Computing Sites and Virtual Sites
Lose
No action needed. Alumni lose access to Campus Computing Sites and Virtual Sites and any software only available via those methods.
GitHub
Lose

Download your personal data or transfer it to a personal GitHub account.

Deadline: Last day of examinations.

LinkedIn Learning
Lose

Connect your U-M LinkedIn Learning account to your personal LinkedIn profile to retain your training history. You may purchase a personal LinkedIn Learning account to continue using LinkedIn Learning after you leave U-M.

Deadline: Within 30 days of the last day of classes.

Login Service for the Linux Login Pool

Printing (MPrint)
Keep
Alumni can still print on campus but will need to purchase print credits and will no longer get an allocation each term.
NameCoach
Keep
To retain your NameCoach recording for personal use, create an audio email signature and save the URL of the recorded link.
Qualtrics

Export any surveys and responses you wish to keep. Transfer ownership of any surveys that are being conducted on behalf of the university to another individual at the university.

U-M Slack
Lose

Download any files you wish to retain and consult with your Workspace Admins about guest roles or sponsorship if you will need access beyond graduation.

Deadline: By the last day of examinations.

U-M Software Directory
Keep

No action needed. Alumni maintain access to a reduced list of software.

Tableau

No action needed. Alumni can take advantage of academic pricing that may not be available to them anywhere else.

Videoconferencing

U-M Microsoft Teams

Download or transfer any recordings you wish to keep from your U-M Microsoft 365 account to your computer.

Deadline: By the last day of examinations.

U-M Zoom
Lose

Download any of your Zoom cloud recordings from your U-M account that you want to keep. You may sign up for a free basic Zoom account with a non-UMICH email address to continue using Zoom.

Change the host of any future or recurring Zoom meetings that are still needed for university business to another individual remaining at the university.

Deadline: By the last day of examinations.

Note: The exact timing of when you lose access to these services depends on when your U-M affiliation changes from “student” to “alum.” The timing of this change is different every semester, but generally, April grads lose access the first week of June, August grads lose access the first week of September, and December grads lose access in early January.

For specific information on when your affiliation will change, contact your school or college’s registrar. ITS strongly encourages you to take the steps above as early as possible to ensure that you have enough time to export your data before you lose access.
